Join The Excellers!
We need you
to help bring the history of Nova Scotia back to life. By Re-enacting the Regiment, Re-enacting the Militia, or Re-enacting
the Civilians, there is fun to be had by the whole family, and a great chance to help us make Nova Scotia an even better place
to live.
WHY THE 40th?
The 40th Regiment of Foot played a huge role in
the early history of Nova Scotia. For 29 years (1717 - 46) the few hundred men of Philipps' Regiment were the sole
power of the British Crown in this “forgotten” colony. Without their struggles and sacrifices, Nova Scotia
might have returned to the control of France, and the history of Canada would have been completely different. Men of
the 40th defended forts at Annapolis Royal, Canso, and Placentia, Nfld., during these years.
Beginning in 1749, the 40th helped build the new town of Halifax. In 1755, the Regiment made up part of the force that
captured Fort Beauséjour from France, and in 1758 they also fought to take the Fortress of Louisbourg. Men of
the 40th were also there under General Wolfe at the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
Finally,
in 1765, after nearly half a century of service, the 40th left Nova Scotia for England, never to return.
It's this unique story we are trying to recreate in The 40th Regiment of Foot Society.
But there's more to it...
... than history. The Society is also a new kind of service club, with
the goal of working for the betterment of our communities. How this is done is up to the members. Bringing our
historic sites to life, to help our tourism industry, is a major goal of our re-enacting. But non-re-enacting activities
like assisting with Ground Search and Rescue, promoting physical activity and environmental awareness, and contributing to
charities, are all ways to make a difference. Even if you have little interest in re-enacting, you might still want
to get involved with The 40th.
Plus... having fun!
Last, but far from least, the Regiment will be a place for socializing and enjoyment for members of all ages and their
guests. Good food, good drink, good conversation, games, music, dance and other pleasures, all in keeping with the spirit
of the 18th Century.

Yarmouth recruiting defeated by weather.
Your Serjeant Quartermaster Clerk was on hand for about an hour during the Tall Ships in Yarmouth, but the lousy weather prevented
any real effort to recruit. Here's hoping for better luck next time!

Welcome! We're up and running!
And just in time for our first major recruiting event at Tall Ships in Halifax on Sun., July 15. Although if the weather looks
lousy we will probably have to cancel. Here's hoping for sunshine, or at least a lack of rain.
Hope you have
fun looking around this site, and feel free to contact us ANYTIME.
Your ob't. s'vt., David Olie, QSC
